Frequently Asked Questions
Q) My general dentist says that he can straighten my teeth. Why should I see a specialist in Orthodontics?
A) Orthodontists receive more formal education than general dentists to specialize in straightening teeth. Like general dentists, orthodontists graduate from dental school. Then, to be an orthodontist, it takes an additional two to three years of education.
Q) Are braces just for kids?
A) One in five orthodontic patients is an adult.
Q) How do I know how to select the best orthodontist?
A) Start by looking for orthodontists that are “American Board of Orthodontics” certified. Additionally, get recommendations from your family dentist, as well as friends that have been treated. Several years of orthodontic experience is a plus.
Q) Will braces look funny on me?
A) Small, clear braces are available. In some cases, clear aligners may be used to straighten your teeth.
Q) I just want a little more information. Can I visit the orthodontist without making a commitment?
A) Yes. We do free consultations, where we will provide you with all the specifics, including cost. You can then decide what is best for you.
Q) Aren’t braces quite expensive?
A) The truth is, over the past 30 years the cost of orthodontic treatment has decreased a great deal, relative to other health care and dental care procedures. We have several different options that will fit most any budget, including a no down payment option.
Q) Are braces painful?
A) The materials used now days are much more comfortable than in years past. In our office, we use wires made of titanium alloys, which impart a much more gentle level of force to move teeth. Pain is almost never a complaint we hear anymore.
